The COVID-19 pandemic raises particular challenges for care home residents, their families and the staff that look after them by adding an additional strain on employees already working under challenging circumstances.

With the revised Government guidance, lockdown is now beginning to be eased.

In the high-risk category, the care home sector must remain vigilant and reassure staff and residents that they are taking adequate measures to minimise health risks.

Julian Lindsell from The Royal Garden, residential hotel near Bognor Regis, talks about his efforts to continue to keep his residents as healthy and safe as possible.

“I have been running the care home since 1991 when the hotel was built. At present we have 36 residents ranging from 80 years upwards who on the whole are pretty much living independently.

“We have been working alongside The Digital Line on a number of their unique programs and have embraced the rise in technology throughout our establishment. In 2018, The Digital Line introduced voice-activated assistants to the residents of a Greater London care home, and we were fortunate to have been a part of that programme.

“When face to face visits with family members was restricted and the lockdown was in place in addition to telephone calls, we already had other means of independent hands-free communication in place for our residents in communal areas.

“We have and will continue to implement the utilisation of PPE throughout the Hotel, provide ample hand sanitiser and tissues in the public areas and offices, adhere to strict visitor restriction and as we have been increasing the frequency of cleanings.

“In addition to these safety measures, we have installed an Airdri SteraSpace in the dining room and also private resident rooms. The Air Purifier is proven to kill harmful airborne and surface viruses and bacteria including the Coronavirus family giving me the confidence that we are maintaining sanitised surfaces between our regular cleaning.

“Our care staff and essential visitors who are entering the homes are continuing to wear face masks at all times and the utilisation of face shields.

“With restrictions being gradually lifted, we understand this can be a time of mixed emotions for many people as everyone strives to return to some form of normality. However, by listening to our residents and taking all precautions necessary we feel we are offering a safe, friendly, community environment.”
